Peggy Goldsmith, 85, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at her home on Thursday, November 24, 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Augustin Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 29 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Peggy Goldsmith, 85, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at her home on Thursday, November 24, 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Augustin Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 29 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Peggy was born October 10, 1931, in Albia, Iowa, the daughter of Dwight and Mary (Bates) Humeston. She was the first of four children. Peggy graduated from Albia High School in 1949; Clarke College, with a major in Biology, in 1953; and Drake University, with a Masters of Education, in 1969.

Peggy married Keith Kirkwood Goldsmith on February 9, 1954, in Baltimore, Maryland. She worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and University of Iowa Hospitals, following their move to Iowa City in 1955. In 1957, Peggy and Keith moved to Des Moines, where she taught at St. Augustin Catholic School and the Des Moines Public Schools of Casady, Madison, and Harding until her retirement in 1993.

Peggy was a member of St. Augustin Catholic Church in Des Moines and a founding member of P.E.O. Chapter LJ. Her interests and hobbies included reading, needlework, bird watching, crossword puzzles, and most of all, spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Keith; five children, Peter Andrew Goldsmith (Carol), Paul Matthew Goldsmith (Leslie), Philip James Goldsmith (Julie), Thomas John Goldsmith (Kelly), and Mary Regina (Gina) Graham (Chris); grandchildren, Karen Goldsmith Johnson (Luke) and Mark Goldsmith, Bryan Goldsmith (Kate) and Rebecca Goldsmith, Nick Goldsmith and Amanda Goldsmith, Emma Goldsmith and Ally Goldsmith, Evan Carver and Abby Carver; great-grandchildren, Blake and Drew Goldsmith; sister, Sandra Corrigan (Don); and a brother, Tony Humeston (Donna). Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Dr. Helen Humeston; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Helen Goldsmith.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, November 28 at McLaren's Chapel, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to Clarke College in Dubuque, St. Augustin School, or the P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund.
